Mercury . How to Change a Tire on a QX4Changing a flat tire on your Infiniti QX4 is an important skill to have. The tools and spare tire are stored in the car so you have them at hand. The QX4 is equipped with a full-size spare tire, giving you time drive to a service station or tire-repair shop and either replace your flat tire or have the necessary repair done. Find a safe place to change the tire if possible. While you can change it on the side of the road, this is not very safe and should be avoided if possible. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Tool kit Spare tire Step by Step : 1 Park your QX4 on a smooth, flat surface and set the parking brake. Lift the rear-seat base from the back edge and locate the jack and tool kit under the seat. 2 Remove the jack, lug wrench and jack rod from under the seat, then go to the rear of the car. Open the lift gate and locate the hole in the body just above the bumper. Insert the jack rod and place the lug wrench on the jack rod by sliding the rod into the hole in the wrench handle. 3 Spin the jack handle counterclockwise and lower the spare tire to the ground. Remove the lift cable from the center of the rim on the spare tire, then slide the tire out from under the rear of the car. 4 Move to the flat tire and loosen the lug nuts using the lug wrench. Do not remove the nuts yet. Locate the jacking points under the car. On the front that is under the frame rail just behind the axle, on the rear it is under the axle. 5 Position the jack under the car, attach the jack rod to the jack, then install the lug wrench on the rod, sliding the rod into the hole in the lug wrench. Turn the jack handle clockwise to lift the car until the tire is off the ground. 6 Remove the lug nuts then remove the flat tire from the car. Install the spare tire on the car and screw on the lug nuts. Lower the jack and remove it from under the car. Tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. 7 Place the spare tire under the car and install the lift cable into the center hole of the tire. Insert the jack rod into the hole in the back of the car and, using the lug wrench, turn the jack rod clockwise until the tire is completely under the rear of the car. 8 Place the jack, jack rod and lug wrench into the storage area under the rear seat and push the seat base down over the compartment.
Mercury . How to Change a Tire on a BMW X3Understanding how to change the tire on your BMW X3 could be the difference between getting home for dinner in time and calling a tow truck. Fortunately, in the event of a flat tire the process of removing and mounting the stock spare tire to get you back on the road is something a person with little to no car maintenance experience can complete. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Vehicle jack Lug nut wrench Spare tire Step by Step : 1 Pull safely off the road, onto a level surface, place in park, engage the handbrake (place in reverse or first gear, if manual) and turn the hazard lights on before checking the mirrors for oncoming traffic. When clear, exit the vehicle. 2 Open the rear lift gate and remove the vehicle jack and lug wrench from underneath the floor cover. Place these items to the side. 3 Locate the spare wheel, mounted externally underneath the cargo area. There you will find a large bolt next to a handle sitting flat against the undercarriage. 4 Unscrew the spare tire bolt, lift the handle and spin it as far left as it will move, which will release the spare tire. Once released, lower the handle, dropping the spare tire slowly towards the ground. 5 Unhook the spare tire-retaining strap, completely freeing the spare tire from the undercarriage and bring it over to the affected flat tire. 6 Spin each of the lug nuts securing the flat tire half a turn with the lug nut wrench. 7 Find the recessed point on the sub-frame nearest the flat tire underneath the BMW X3. BMW designed four points near each of the tires for jacking up the vehicle. 8 Jack the wheel up until it is three inches off the ground before proceeding to completely unscrew and remove each of the lug nuts. Once unbolted, remove the flat tire from the lugs, place it off to the side and mount the spare tire. 9 Tighten the lug nuts in a diagonal pattern back onto the newly mounted spare tire and lower the jack until the tire rests on the ground. Further tighten each of the lug nuts. BMW recommends the lug nuts be tightened to 101 ft-lbs. Step by Step : 10 Stow the lug wrench and jack back into their floorboard compartment and place the flat tire in the cargo area. Tips & Warnings Refer to the owner's manual to reset the flat-tire monitor indicator. Visit a BMW authorized service provider to make sure each of the lug nuts meets correct torque specifications. BMW warns that mounting the spare tire can change driving characteristics such as stability while braking, increase braking distance and affect self-steering features. *Don't try to open the radiator pressure cap or coolant reservoir to get water to wet the rag. The pressure in the overheated system can cause hot liquid to spray out and burn you. If you don't have a wet rag, wrap aluminum foil around the fuel line and leave it in place after you get started. No aluminum foil? Then just sit there and wait for the darn thing to cool down. Eventually, the vapor lock will go away. If neither of the above seems to be the case, try the following set of steps that applies to your vehicle. 954

If the engine starts and then dies, it's a fuel problem. If the engine cranks without firing, it's an ignition system or compression problem. 2. If the engine did start with fuel injector cleaner, find out whether the fuel pump isn't pumping fuel or the computer isn't triggering the fuel injectors. Mercury . Look down the carburetor barrel and push the accelerator pump arm. Is fuel squirting into the venturi? If so, then the float bowl is full, but it still may not be getting a fresh supply of fuel when it needs it. 2. Disconnect the fuel pump end of the hose that leads from the carburetor to the fuel pump (see Figure 21-2) and place the end of the hose in ajar or plastic bag. If you don't have anything to put the hose in, forget this entire procedure. Never let gasoline run onto the ground. It's flammable and toxic to the environment. Also, be sure not to let gasoline run out of the hose onto your clothes or the engine. And if it's very hot, fan the area to disburse the fumes. Somewhere along that line is the fuel filter. The filter could have jammed — especially if it hasn't been changed in ages. Mercury . What kind of a small scale industry can be started by a new entrepreneur?

To carburetor 3. Bump the starter and see whether gasoline squirts out of the hose. If it does, then your fuel filter and fuel pump are probably all right. If nothing comes out of the hose, you probably have either a plugged fuel filter, a defective fuel pump, or a broken fuel line — or you're out of gas. 4. Try to eliminate the fuel filter as the villain by removing it (Chapter 13 tells you how) to see whether gas comes out of the hose. If you changed the filter recently, ignore this step and look under the rear end of the car to see whether fuel is leaking from a broken fuel line. .Chapter 21: What to Do If Your Car Drops Dead or Won't Start Fire If your engine is getting enough air and fuel, you're probably having ignition system trouble. As I explain in Chapter 4, the "fire" is really electric current that's stored in the battery, replaced by the alternator, amplified by the coil and, in some vehicles, directed by a distributor to each spark plug. (Newer vehicles have distributorless ignition systems — Chapter 5 has the details.) If something along the way goes wrong and the spark fails to reach the plugs, all the air and fuel in the world won't produce combustion in the cylinders, and the vehicle won't go. Because the engine was running before it died, it's probably not the fault of the battery, solenoid, or starter, which brings you to the distributor cap — assuming that your vehicle has one. If you have a distributorless system, you'll need professional help to check it out. Checking the distributor cap Mercury . Can you drive a car after the inspection runs out in PA?
* With the engine off, check to see whether the cables that run from the distributor cap to the spark plugs are pushed down securely at each end. Check the cable that runs from the distributor cap to the coil to be sure that it, too, is secure. How about the smaller wires that come out of the coil? Because many cars now have high-energy ignition systems that operate at 47,000 volts or higher, pulling a distributor or spark plug cable to test for a spark is unsafe. If your car has an electronic ignition system, the ignition module may have gone bad. If you have an electronic ignition system or a distributorless ignition system, skip the rest of the checks in this section. If your car has a non-electronic ignition system, follow the instructions in Chapter 12 to remove the distributor cap and look at the points. Do they open and close when you bump the starter? If not, adjust them so that they do and try to start the car again. If there's still no action, your points could be oxidized or fouled by a bit of grease or oil. Bump the engine so that the points are closed, and insert the tip of a screwdriver, nail file, matchbook cover, or feeler gauge between them to rub the point surfaces and eliminate the oxidation or dirt. If you still can't get the engine to turn over, move on to the next section. Replacing the rotor, condenser, and points If you've kept your old rotor, points, and condenser in the trunk of your car because they were still working when you replaced them during a tune-up, you can use these parts to try to find and correct your problem. First, following instructions in Chapter 12, try replacing the rotor with the old one. If that doesn't work, replace the condenser. If that doesn't work, replace the points. Don't worry about adjusting the point gap; as long as the points open and close, the engine will run. Part IV: Dealing with On-the-Road Emergencies. I've been told that the most frequent cause of engine failure on vehicles with old-style, non-electronic distributors is improper lubrication of the cam when the points were changed. Because of this, the little rubbing block gets worn down, and then, even when the block rests on the cam lobe, there's not enough surface to force the points apart. That's why, if you have a nonelectronic ignition system, it's important to check your dwell every 5,000 miles and replace points at every tune-up (see Chapter 12 for instructions). If you've checked everything out and your vehicle still won't go, you're probably going to have to wait for help. Sometimes part of your engine has given out. Sometimes it's the transmission. If that's the case, you may be saying good-bye to Old Faithful. On the bright side, you usually have plenty of warning before a car gives up the ghost. Of course, if you haven't checked and maintained your vehicle properly — if you've ignored the warnings, the knockings, the smoke from the tailpipe, the hesitations and the other symptoms I cover in Chapter 20 — well, you asked for it.
